Ever wondered who is responsible for your precious baggage after you part with it at the airport? The airline takes responsibility for any checked baggage you trust them with, giving you a legal right for reimbursement, up to €1300. This covers damaged baggage, loss of baggage, and also expenses they induce by delaying your baggage. Delays

Eligible for reimbursement of induced additional expenses. This is in most cases limited to purchasing essential replacement items for for the baggage contents, and receipts must be presented. Best chance of receiving reimbursement if Property Irregularity Report (PIR) was submitted within 7 days of the arrival.

Damage and missing contents

Eligible for compensation if it can be proven that the damage and/or loss of contents had occurred while the checked baggage was handled by the airline and its partners (usually via the provision of photos). Hand luggage only eligible if the damage is the direct fault of the airline. Best chance of receiving compensation if Property Irregularity Report (PIR) was submitted within 7 days of the arrival.

Loss

Eligible for compensation for all baggage checked in for transportation in the aircraft hold. A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) must have been submitted before the submission of the baggage claim. Baggage is officially considered lost 21 days after the date of the arrival.

Compensation limit

Airlines are legally required to provide monetary compensation and/or reimbursement in the above cases up to 1131 Standard Drawing Rights (SDR), which is a currency with a conversion rate to other currencies that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) updates on a daily basis. It is currently equivalent to about €1300.
